A church ruin in the small village of Västerstad – the remains of a small church built in the 12th century.
The church ruin in Västerstad was built in the late 12th century by the same stonemason who was also involved in Dalby Church and Lund Cathedral. On the tower of the ruin you can see the year 1748. In the late 1870s, the church was replaced by a larger one and much of the interior was removed. It became a ruin that is often used for open-air services and concerts. The ruin stands in the old churchyard and is surrounded by a stone wall. There are around thirty illegible gravestones. At the south‑west corner of the ruin, by the wall, there is a memorial from the time of the Snapphane guerrillas – a so‑called “kumminhage”. Legend has it that marksmen hid in the vicarage in 1678 when it was surrounded by Swedish troops. The Snapphanes are said to have been betrayed by the priest and killed by the Swedes. The photo is from the Diocese of Lund, the Church of Sweden, and was taken by Karna Nilsson. At the moment, the ruin is closed due to risk of collapse.
